With over 200 works on paper, the Alte Pinakothek displays a panorama of draughtsmanship from the 16th to the 21st century. From the development of the medium into an independent art form during the Renaissance to its surprising reinterpretations in recent contemporary art, the exhibition is an impressive example of how drawing can offer us a very immediate, intimate glimpse of the essence and process of an artist’s creative work.

Drawing is also the ideal medium for a historical comparison of the development processes of art, and is particularly appealing due to the fact that the technical prerequisites — paper, pen or quill — always remain the same.

The presentation in the Pinakothek der Moderne concentrates on 150 works on paper by Joseph Beuys who is, more than any other artist, the major focus of the Klüser Collection. These excellent artworks from the period between the 1950s and 1970s demonstrate his exceptional skills as a draughtsman and reveal how he mastered a wide variety of materials.
